A leading mining company had more than 80,000 employees working across substantial digital infrastructure. Like most critical infrastructure organizations, the company faced significant challenges in managing insider risk effectively. Mine leadership had identified a need for a comprehensive solution that could integrate meaningful data from various platforms in order to provide the necessary behavioral context to proactively mitigate insider risks before data loss occurred. In other words, they needed a solution that would enable them to get ‘left of boom’.

Before adopting DTEX, the mining company had an array of technology platforms including SIEM, endpoint and cloud security, document management and more. While these individual platforms were effective in their domains, the lack of integration and correlation between them posed numerous challenges.

The mine’s driving issue was the inability to connect the dots and understand the early warning indicators of risky user activity. Although data was collected from across the security ecosystem, there was no clear picture of risk or potential threats due to the lack of contextual, behavioral telemetry. This fragmented approach resulted in operational inefficiencies, leaving analysts reactive rather than proactive in their risk mitigation efforts.

Built on Amazon Web Services, DTEX emerged as the game-changer with the DTEX Platform, providing a single pane of glass for insider risk management that was separate from the traditional security operations center (SOC).

By adopting the DTEX Platform and taking advantage of AWS scale and availability, the mining company successfully integrated disparate data sources and gained valuable context for user actions. Now with a ‘single pane of glass’, the DTEX Platform proactively identifies risk and remediates faster, ultimately leading to a notable reduction in data loss incidents. Other results included:

  • Proactive Insider Risk Management: With the DTEX Platform in place, the company shifted from a reactive approach to proactive insider risk management, identifying risks earlier in the insider threat lifecycle and taking preventive action faster.
  • Speed of Risk Identification and Remediation: DTEX streamlined SOC operations by accelerating the identification and remediation of insider risk incidents, reducing investigation timelines from months to days.
  • Simplified Investigations: DTEX’s intuitive dashboards and correlation capabilities simplified investigations, allowing analysts to make faster, more informed decisions.
  • Quantifiable Outcomes: Within six months of implementing DTEX, the mining company achieved a significant reduction of more than 50% in data loss incidents compared to the same period in the previous year.

  • Ingesting and Correlating Disparate Data: The DTEX Platform ingests data from various platforms and sensors (covering human, cyber, physical, and organizational) – quickly, easily and at scale – to provide the necessary context to accurately calculate and remediate insider risk.
  • Behavioral Context: DTEX provides valuable contextual telemetry at the endpoint layer, providing better correlation of behavioral data and user activities to create more holistic risk profiles.
  • Dynamic Risk Scoring: DTEX utilizes a dynamic risk scoring mechanism based on an aggregate threshold, enabling proactive identification of risks and the ability to take action before an incident occurs.
